Funded by the Ernest Cook Trust, The Equitable Trust and Arts Council England this is a unique opportunity for children to be inspired in science by being taken on an adventure (by their teacher and in their classroom) over 6 weeks.

The Astronautical Challenge is an Unlimited production made in collaboration with Coney and Radiowaves

The Astronautical Challenge

Join us for the mission of a lifetime!

The internationally renowned Polka Theatre commissioned us to create our first full show for children – a new play to inspire children aged 7-11 about science, space travel and the wonders of the solar system.... (more on the show here)

To complement the show, we've worked with our long term collaborators CONEY (“Agency for Adventure”) and the award winning Radiowaves (“Safe, secure podcasting, video and blogs for schools”) to create The Astronautical Challenge - an adventure for Key Stage 2 to inspire children in science.

The Astronautical Challenge empowers the participating children by casting them as the heroes in their own version of a story as it develops, successfully completing the challenges the story presents – challenges which happen to demand meeting many different parts of the curriculum, especially science.

"I loved the whole programme. It made science exciting and fun and the lesson plans were a fantastic help. The children were extrememly motivated by the whole thing, every aspect excited them and they were engrosed in the characters created and the sense of competition." Teacher, Holy Trinity Primary London

The story and challenges are responsive and bespoke to the class and the strengths and weaknesses of the individual children. Teachers play a key role in delivering the adventure with specific challenges designed bespoke to meet each individual teacher’s needs.

"There was a definite improvement in motivation for science, particularly for the girls, and digital media skills showed great progress. One of the average attaining girls, and a lower than average attaining girl both worked really well, showing immense enthusiasm - in the case of the lower attainer, it really developed her speech and communication in the lessons."Teacher, Deanshanger Primary Northampton

We also provide training (through an Inset Day and a detailed “How To” manual) for teachers to allow you to ‘go on the adventure’ along with your class. We continue to support, develop and feed into the story remotely via email and a dedicated (and secure) website where the children can upload their responses to the challenges.

The classroom remains the domain of teacher and children.

This is an awesome opportunity for schools that has been funded by the Ernest Cook Trust, the Equitable Trust and Arts Council England.

We've already run the project with 300 children in London and Northampton with new adventures running in Leeds and Leicester in 2011.

"It was a fabulous experience for both myself and the class. The children were extremely excited and motivated by the play Mission to Mars too." Teacher, Flore Primary London

"They loved the live interactive nature - it had a genuine feeling of anticipation and excitment." Teacher, Blossom House School (specialist school for children with speech, language and learning difficulties)

All places for the next series of adventures in Leeds and Leciester are now booked but we are planning on runnning this project again. If you'd like to be the first to know when, then please contact Gloria Lindh (Administrator) on 0113 234 5400 or by email through the Contact Form.

OTHER PROJECTS FOR SCHOOLS

THE ETHICS OF PROGRESS

“An extraordinary resource for schools… A highly crafted, science based performance-lecture, with humour and beautiful projection, available for schools to bring into their classes. This is inspiring stuff presented to re-infect young people with curiosity about Physics." Rupert Rowbotham - Education Director, Oxford Playhouse '07

More than just a straightforward explanation of science, ETHICS is an accessible, easy to understand and thought provoking 50-minute theatrical classroom presentation for 14-18 year olds about quantum physics. Looking at the possibilities of teleportation in ever day life, ETHICS uses humour and cutting edge technology to ignite young people’s interest in a subject previously considered too complex for teaching at this level, and asks them to reconsider how newly emerging technology will irretrievably change the world as we currently view it.
